Convergence — Interior States

In Convergence, I bring together many of the colors that move individually throughout my Interior States collection—cobalt and turquoise, green, blush, cherry red, yellow and ivory—into one small, concentrated composition. Rather than allowing a single color to establish the emotional atmosphere, the palette converges around a radiant center, creating a sense of energy, movement and wholeness.
The painting began for me as an abstract sunset, but I am less interested in describing a landscape than in capturing the emotional experience of one. I have always been drawn to the way artists such as Edvard Munch transformed the natural world into something psychological—where sky, light and color seem capable of expressing an internal experience. In Convergence, the setting sun becomes a point of concentration, with radial balance and directional marks pulling the surrounding color toward the light while simultaneously allowing it to radiate outward.
The heavily textured, impasto surface is especially important to this small painting. Layers of color accumulate, overlap and interrupt one another, allowing traces of previous marks to remain visible. There is activity and complexity, but everything ultimately belongs to the same visual field.
Within my Interior States collection, Convergence represents a moment when seemingly separate experiences come together. Where other paintings in the series explore individual states such as longing, anticipation, surrender or uncertainty, this work allows those different energies to coexist within a single space.
For me, Convergence is about integration—the moment when the separate colors, experiences and fragments we carry within ourselves begin to form something whole.
