The Distance Within

Cobalt and ultramarine blue carry centuries of artistic history, bringing both visual depth and symbolic resonance to this contemporary abstract painting. Ultramarine, originally created from precious lapis lazuli transported to Europe from Central Asia, was once among the most valuable pigments available to artists and became associated with devotion, transcendence, distance, and the infinite. Its deep, slightly violet character naturally recedes, drawing the eye inward. Cobalt blue emerged as a modern artist’s pigment in the early nineteenth century and offers a clearer, more luminous and atmospheric blue, historically prized for its ability to evoke sky, air, and expansive space. Within the Interior States collection, these two historic blue pigments take on a contemporary psychological dimension: cobalt creates atmosphere while ultramarine creates depth. Layered through architectural perspective and fields of saturated color, they create the simultaneous sensation of expansion and introspection—transforming a contemporary blue abstract painting into a space that feels less like something to simply look at and more like somewhere to enter.
